Writing is Imagination in Flight

About Me

My photo
Ruth J. Hartman spends her days herding cats, and her nights spinning mysterious romantic tales that make you smile and laugh out loud - or so she's been told my readers! She, her husband Garry, and their two cats, love to spend time curled up in their recliners watching old Cary Grant movies. Well, the cats, Roxy and Remmie, sit in the people's recliners. Not that the cats couldn't get their own furniture. They just choose to shed on someone else's. You know how selfish those little furry creatures can be.

Love a Good Mystery? Me too!!

Life's a Mystery...

At least, my life has been for the last year and a half. I've just written THE END to my fourth mystery! I love writing romance, and never thought I'd write mysteries, but after my first one, I was hooked! Just now, I emailed the latest to my agent, Cyle Young. Stay tuned for upcoming news of what happens next!

My Writing Process Blog Tour

I've been asked to participate in a "My Writing Process" blog tour. The talented Kay Springsteen, best-selling author, asked me to join in.

http://kayspringsteen.wordpress.com

Here are the questions that authors on the tour have been asked:

1) What am I working on?

Right now, I actually have two works-in-progress. The first is a short Regency about a poor woman who takes care of cats no one wants and ends up meeting a handsome rich man whose aunt needs a new cat for company for her older one. I'm also starting on book three of a series that began with "Love Birds of Regent's Park", continues with "The Unwanted Earl" (in the editing process), and continues with book three (yet untitled).

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Since I have a goofy sense of humor, most of my novels do, too. I've had readers tell me that my books give them a small, enjoyable vacation from the everyday troubles where they can laugh at the antics of my characters and nod their heads because they could see the situation happening, possibly even to them.

3) Why do I write what I do?

I started out writing contemporary romance, but was asked by a friend to give Regency Romance a try. I wasn't sure I could do it, but ended up loving it. I now have several Regency Romances published and more in the works!

4) How does your writing process work?

I start with a simple idea for the book. Sometimes I have a title right away but others may not have a title until I'm nearly finished writing. I do a simple outline, but don't go into detail until I actually sit down to write. Many times, the characters head in the direction they want the story to go and I just type the words. It's so much more fun that way :)

The next author in line is the wonderfully talented Mysti Parker. :)

Please check out Mysti Parker's page on 01/13/14 for her answers to the writing questions. http://mystiparker.blogspot.com

"Elect" by Rachel Van Dyken - Launch Day!

Check out the newest release by my good friend, Rachel Van Dyken!

Nixon Abandonato made his choice. And now he has to pay the price. Tracey is the love of his life, but being with him has made her a target of his family's enemies. The only way to keep Trace alive is convince the world she means nothing to him.

Trace Rooks has fallen irrevocably in love with the son of her family's sworn rival, and she knows in her bones nothing can tear them apart. Until Nix suddenly pushes her away and into the arms of his best friend... But Trace isn't ready to give up on a future with Nix--and if he won't fight for them, she will.

In the end, a sacrifice must be made. A life for a life. For what better way to cover a multitude of sins than with the blood of a sinner . . .

Excerpt:
I woke up with a killer hangover. My fault. Grumbling, I took a shower and went downstairs to get some breakfast before I went over to the Space to see if Phoenix would change his tune.
“Hey.” Trace was sitting at the table eating some toast.
“Hey.” I waved. Idiot. She was sitting right in front of me.
Her eyes didn’t leave mine. I was frozen in place and could literally hear every beat of my heart in the silence.
“You’re wrong, you know.” She stood and walked toward me. “About a lot of things—everything, actually. And you’re an ass.”
“I—”
“I’m talking, you’re listening.” She smirked and grabbed the front of my shirt and pushed me toward the pantry. She slammed me against the door, pretty forcefully, I might add, and then opened it and shoved me in. I mean, I could fight her but I was too damn turned on and curious to do anything except stare at her.
“I. Want. You.” She took off her shirt. What the hell? “Only you.” Her jeans were next.
The pantry immediately became my number one favorite spot in the house.
Facing me in nothing but her scandalous white lacy underwear, she whispered in my ear. “This. What you see? What’s in front of you, it’s not just about me wanting you. I want all of you. I want to be vulnerable with you, exposed. But you have to let me…maybe the reason I don’t want to open up that part of myself to Chase is because he isn’t you, Nixon. He doesn’t have this.” She placed my hand on her bare skin right above her breast. Shit, I was slowly dying inside. Did she even realize what the hell she was doing to me?
“He doesn’t have our history, our past, our drama. I love him, you’re right. I love him so damn much that I can’t imagine life without him. But he and I—we aren’t this. So tell me, Nixon. Tell me if you want me to forget. I’ll forget what we have, if that’s really what you want. If you want me to jump into his arms without looking back, I will. But know I’ll hate you forever for giving me up.”
“I’m not,” I interrupted her. “You can’t give up something you never had.”
She slapped me hard across the face. “You promised, Nixon. You promised me.”
I kissed her hard on the mouth, clenching her wrists in my hands as I pinned her against the door. “You’re right,” I growled and pulled away. “And I’m sorry for hurting us, for hurting you, but Trace…next time you trap me in a closet, in nothing but your underwear. I will take advantage of you. I’ll screw you until you forget your own name. Don’t play with fire, and don’t mess with me. I’m still terrible for you; he’s better, and I stand by what I did. Now move out of the way before I truly lose control and steal your virginity next to the damn Cheerios.”
She crossed her arms over her chest and glared as I sidestepped her and walked out of the pantry and directly into Tex.
“Whoa!” Tex looked at my face and then lower. His smile widened. “Taking care of business in the pantry or Mrs. Butterworth just make you horny?”
“Shut up.”
“It’s cool! She’s naked, I get it!” Tex called after me, while I raced back up the stairs, grabbed my phone and keys, and then ran out of the house. Away from Trace, away from everything.

Kitty Cat Capers and Castaway Hearts

First and foremost, I’d like to thank Ruth for inviting me to visit on her blog today.

Though I don’t have any cats in Castaway Hearts, I am a cat person through and through. My cat, Miscellaneous, aka Mizzy or Moo-Moo or “The Miz”, holds a special place in my heart and luckily doesn’t cause me as much trouble as Kitty’s cat Arthur in Ruth’s Purrfect Voyage, but she still has a few adventures of her own.

Mizzy is 9 years old and I got her when I was about 7 months pregnant with my daughter in October 2002. She was only a couple months old at the time and a handful, constantly getting into things she had no business getting into, but I’ll chalk that up to exploring her new territory. The most damage she did—We had to replace the dryer vent hose. She thought the window behind the washer and dryer might be a good lookout, but her tiny little claws ripped right through the foil hose we had at the time.

That was nothing to her first Christmas a couple months later. Tiny as she was, I sat in awe as I watched this little furball launch herself into the Christmas tree from the arm of the couch about 2-3 feet away. This resulted in me having to detangle her from the garland and light strands and gather half dozen ornaments that scattered when she literally CATapulted herself into all the twinkling and bling-bling of the tree branches. She has NEVER tangled with the Christmas tree again.

Most of her days are spent sleeping, staring at me with serious intent (though about what, I’m not sure), stretching out on the bed or couch until she’s doubled in length, purring loudly and giving me that expectant, “Here’s my belly, rub it.” look. She does take out time for minimum food/water/bathroom breaks, but in a nutshell, the rest of her day is devoted to being, well, a spoiled fur-baby.

She is well meaning, but she’s not much of a mouser. Living in the country, we have mice issues from time to time- mostly in the winter, and out of concern for Miz, I opt to use sticky traps instead of the good old snap-traps. She does catch the occasional mouse herself- once she caught one and dropped it at the feet of my, then, one-year-old daughter. Ick! I’ve since learned that cats don’t always bring you “gifts” like that just to say, “I love you” or even “Hey, I’m doing my part.”

No, it’s more along the lines of your cat trying to educate you on how YOU are doing it wrong—

“See…THIS is how you hunt for food. You are no hunter and don’t know how to do it. Let me show you the PROPER way to supply food and nourishment for our family.”

Of course, I’ve learned over the years not to leave ANY kind of trap out where The Miz can get to it. Not after she came limp-jogging through the living room with a sticky trap shoe flopping on a front paw one morning. If I’m not mistaken, it also had a mouse attached and she’d apparently been “pawing” at it, tormenting it, only to find she’d fallen victim to the stickiness as well. My husband had to pull it off and for several days after that she weebled and wobbled and stuck to the carpet until the sticky wore off. I wouldn’t trade her for the world though.

Thanks again for having me, Ruth!

Please take a moment to check out my debut novel, Castaway Hearts, now available from Turquoise Morning Press.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Twice orphaned, Catherine Barrett arrives in Virginia a stranger to her closest kin and secretly engaged to the one man her family would disapprove of- her seafaring grandfather’s apprentice. Add to her troubles, the rich and intriguing older brother of her secret betrothed, Dawson Randolph, a plantation owner who is as heartless as he is handsome. Heartbroken when her intended sets sail for his maiden voyage, Catherine finds it difficult to adjust to her new life, hoping to befriend the one man who is, undoubtedly, the match her grandparents wish for her. Dawson’s distaste for her secret engagement to his brother makes it clear he has no designs for marriage to anyone. Especially her.
Ten years since the tragic loss of his young wife and infant son, Dawson Randolph is convinced love and marriage is a fool’s game and resents being pardon to his brother’s hidden engagement. Damned by his instant attraction and his own growing desire, Dawson vows to befriend her against his better judgment. Determined to bring her happiness in a time of fear and uncertainty, Dawson puts aside his animosity to become her confidant, only to realize Catherine holds the key to his heart. When tragedy strikes at sea, Catherine’s guilt pushes Dawson to the fringes of her life as madness consumes her.
Can his love save her before she drowns in her own grief? Or is he doomed to love her from a distance, always in the shadow of her love for his dead brother?
Guest Post by Julie A. Lindsey!
Ruth! Thank you so much for letting me stop at your blog today J This is my very first blog tour and I am so happy it’s ridiculous. I’m still reeling over the idea of being a romance writer. It just goes to show, you never know where life will lead you.
Personally, I don’t feel like an author. I’m a reader. An avid, insatiable, word nerd. <-- That’s me. Writing romance was never on my radar. Then, I found myself improvising mentally through the flirting and kissing scenes in more and more books. The authors didn’t quite nail it the way my mind wanted them to. This is silly because of course that happens. We write from the heart and everyone has a unique set of life experience and perceptions they use to visualize the books as they read.
But it bugged me.
One particular book had me on the edge of my seat, screaming at the hero “Kiss her already!” I was a mess waiting in beloved anticipation. Then the kiss was ‘meh.’ You see, I already had something in mind I wanted to happen in the process of their first kiss, and for some unknown reason, the author who I have never and will never meet didn’t know what I wanted or didn’t care. As a result I was disappointed. I complained about it to my husband more than once, not remembering I’d already registered the same complaint. The second time, he said (probably something like, I don’t really care first) “Why not write it yourself.” I think he might’ve been thinking something more along the lines of fan fiction, but not me.
I started making believe while I was on the treadmill. Every day I jogged and daydreamed. Writers call it plotting, but I was in reader mindset and I was daydreaming. When I came across the Turquoise Morning Press’call for submission to the new Honey Creek line, I was already armed with a great kiss I’d imagined in my head a hundred times and a sassy heroine to go with it. I knew many of the factors I needed to write a fun romance and the press filled in the details about where my characters lived.
That ‘meh’ kiss I read, set off a series of events that changed everything for me. My debut novella Bloom is out now and you can read that kiss I that had wanted to read and instead got the chance to write. Bloom is now the first in my Seeds of Love series for Honey Creek where I got to write lots more kissy scenes. I swoon every time I think of it. I swoon a lot.
I hope you’ll visit Honey Creek. It’s a beautiful place where anything can happen. Kick off your shoes, relax into that porch swing and cuddle up to a steamy mug of cider. Taking a trip to Honey Creek is as easy as Amazon : ) See you there!
Bloom by Julie Anne Lindsey
In a town filled with her past, she never expected to find her future…
Seven years ago Cynthia left Honey Creek with a broken heart. Three years ago Mitchell arrived with one. Now Cynthia’s come home, and these two hardened hearts can’t stop arguing. If they’d only take a break long enough to find some common ground, they might be surprised to find love can grow anywhere.
If they’ll let it, love will find a way to Bloom.
*Bloom is book one in my new Seeds of Love series. I’ll be planting those seeds all year.
New Year - New Possibilities
I'm not a huge believer in resolutions. At least not just for the new year. If I'm going to change something, I need to make it an ongoing, life changing goal. So, instead of resolutions, which I rarely keep, I like to think of it as new possibilities.
In 2008, I was fortunate enough to have my first book published. I wasn't sure I had another book in me after that, but was pleased to discover, I did! What followed were several sweet, funny romances. I had a ball writing those. And there's more to come. Because I enjoy writing them so much, I can't seem to stop :)
I've also had published my first children's book. Not only did I get to write the story, I illustrated it, too. Now that was fun! I always liked to color and draw as a kid. Some things never change, apparently. As I planned, sketched and used my colored pencils, my story of a kitten born without paw-pads came to life.
There's always a letdown after a book is published. It's like looking forward to a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. You plan. You dream. You eagerly await the day when you step on the plane that will whisk you away to your dream destination. Then, all to quickly, it's over.
That's why I feel so blessed to have more than one book in me. When one book is finished, I can move onto the next. And hopefully, will have learned enough from the experience that the following one will be better.
So this new year brings new possibilities. And new stories to tell. New illustrations to draw. New people to entertain.
I , for one, am really looking forward to that!
Have a Blessed New Year!
Five Star Review for Pillow Talk!
Review of Pillow Talk by Toni Sweeney
Trixie Trident is the owner of a small jewelry-making business but she has a deep dark secret. At night, she dresses in black, steals into sleeping children’s room, and… Takes away their fallen-out teeth and leaves them money instead. That’s right. Trixie Trident is a tooth fairy! (With a name like that, what else could she be?) Tooth fairies aren’t made, they’re born, and there are many of them, of which Trixie is only one, but she’s a good one—if a trifle klutzy—and she loves her work and the kids. There’s one little boy who gives her problems, however—Timmy Westfeller, who has lost so many teeth, Trixie wonders if the child has any left. Not only that, but Timmy has managed to wake up twice during her visits, and he’s not only seen but talked to Trixie, though of course, no adult believes him… Yet.
Trixie’s real problems start when she bites into a French fry with a bit of gravel inside and breaks a tooth. The tooth fairy ends up at a dentist’s, and not just any dentist but heart-breakingly handsome Graham Keebler—and who couldn’t love a dentist named after two cookies? It isn’t long before tooth fairy and tooth doctor are feeling a mutual attraction having nothing to do with teeth. Of course, Korkie, Graham’s dental assistant, who seems to think she has first dibs on the toothsome oral physician and isn’t afraid to let Trixie know…but she’s soon to be the least of Trixie’s problems.
When Graham buys a piece of Trixie’s jewelry for his sister, her small business blossoms. Sister Anna wants to give a jewelry party, with Trixie’s wares on display, and while they are there, she and her mother disclose a few secrets about Graham and how he feels. They also fix Korkie’s little red wagon and that further enhances the assistant’s desire to get her rival out of the picture. A short time later, Graham asks Trixie to be his date to his cousin’s wedding. Trixie is overjoyed, and she and Graham have a great time, in spite of a minor problem concerning her climbing into his monster truck resulting in his sporting a black eye at the reception. And then, Graham introduces Trixie to his nephew and her world comes crashing down. It’s Timmy, and the first thing the little boy blurts out is, “It’s the tooth fairy!”
All the adults laugh off the child’s accusation as an overactive imagination…all except Graham, that is. Now Trixie knows she can’t see her handsome dentist any more, because she has to keep her secret just that. But she’s also come to realize he’s the one, the man she wants to spend her life with—when she isn’t collecting teeth—and she’s certain he feels the same way about her.
What’s a tooth fairy to do? Trixie knows, but is she strong enough to do it?
MY OPINION: I laughed out loud while reading this book, and believe me, I rarely do that. This story is a novella, but it’s a whimsical delight. A klutzy tooth fairy who loves cats and kids, and has problems with her overweight supervisor as well as her dentist’s jealous assistant, and a somewhat shy dentist who loves cats and kids and has eyes only for a certain patient. All the characters are so well-defined in the short space allowed you’ll find them easy to love…or hate. It’s cute, it’s sweet, it’s a fairy tale for adults. If you want a Happily Ever After that’ll make you smile, as well as have a few loud chuckles along the way, this is the story for you!
