Writing is Imagination in Flight

About Me

My photo
Ruth J. Hartman spends her days herding cats, and her nights spinning mysterious romantic tales that make you smile and laugh out loud - or so she's been told my readers! She, her husband Garry, and their two cats, love to spend time curled up in their recliners watching old Cary Grant movies. Well, the cats, Roxy and Remmie, sit in the people's recliners. Not that the cats couldn't get their own furniture. They just choose to shed on someone else's. You know how selfish those little furry creatures can be.

Rachel Rocks! - Blog Hop

Rachel Van Dyken
Rachel Van Dyken, a personal friend of mine got the most thrilling news when we were all at a convention a couple of weeks ago. It was every writer's dream - a huge contract and publishing deal with Grand Central Publishing (Hatchette)! She was so excited! And let me tell you, she totally deserves it!

Rachel is sweet, caring, hard-working, and a fantastic writer! She has helped me so much in my own writing, and I will be forever grateful :)

Here's one of her books. It was so hard to pick just one for the hop, so I picked one that means a lot to me. This book is the reason I became interested in writing Regency Romances. Because Rachel does it so well! I love the fact that her Regencies all have humor. That just makes it for me :)

Waltzing with the Wallflower (Waltzing with the Wallflower, #1)

So several of us are hosting a huge blog hop in Rachel's honor, giving away prizes, and basically giving Rachel a big cyber high-five :)

I'll be giving away two ebooks of my Regency Romance, "Rescued by a Duke" Just leave me a comment here, along with your email addy to be in the contest for my giveaway :)

Are You an Introverted Writer?

Two days ago, I ran errands. Some, the usual boring stuff. Others, ones that come up every so often, but need to be dealt with nonetheless.

Maybe it's because people's kids are out of school, or people are on vacation, or both, but I think every person in the universe followed me to the grocery, post office, bank, and even the drive-thru at McDonalds. (Needed my vanilla shake fix, you know?) It was hot, humid, and buggy. In my Jeep for the shake wasn't as bad, it just tried my patience. But standing in line at the grocery? I wanted to scream. If you're like me, you hate people in your personal space. Hate it. And this day was no different. I scooted up as far as I could to the person in front of me without, of course, getting in their personal space. Yet, the woman behind me was breathing down my neck. Quite literally. Makes my skin crawl just to think about it.

The post office was even worse. It's a tiny building, with a tiny area to mail packages, and an even tinier space to stand in line to wait for the next available postal employee. What was taking so long? The man behind me was coughing, sending my OCD into overdrive. The person in front of me wouldn't move forward, even though she could, so that left me squished with the people behind me, who didn't seem to give a rat's patoot about anyone's personal space.

I had to control my breathing, tell myself to stay calm, and pray it would all end soon. I gritted my teeth together, desperately wishing I had my nightguard handy. Wouldn't be pretty for a dental hygienist to crack all of her front teeth, now would it?

By the time I got out of there and into my Jeep, I had to sit there for a few minutes, just to calm down. It was such a relief to get home and in front of my computer. Back to my writing. Back to characters who don't breath down my neck, cough on the back of my head, or crowd me in with other sweaty, disgruntled people.

I like being around people, just not all the time. I can happily go all day without seeing anyone but my husband. That suits me just fine. Maybe that's one of the reason's writing appeals to me. I can be creative, in my own space, without others pushing, shoving, coughing or breathing!

What are some of the reasons you love to write?

Free Read - "Why Does My Cat Lick My Eyebrow?" - Short Story

“Why Does My Cat Lick My Eyebrow?”
By
Ruth J. Hartman

I’m guessing most people don’t carry on conversations with their cats. I’m not most people. I wanted to know more about Maxwell. I felt, as his owner, I deserved at least that. I clean his litter box every day, after all. So I requested a mock interview with him. He didn’t like it much, but he doesn’t possess opposable thumbs, and must rely on me to get his kitty treats out of the cabinet.

“Sure,” said Maxwell. “But keep it short. I’ve got to do my toes in twenty minutes.”

I assured him I had just a few pertinent questions in mind. “First of all, “what does that mean, ‘do my toes’?”

“If you have to ask, you haven’t been paying enough attention to me. But why am I not surprised?” Maxwell glared at me.

I stared back.

“Oh, all right,” he said. “It’s like this.”

He demonstrated by curling back his lips and gnawing the tangled fur between his toes until every hair was parallel to his claws.

I was fascinated. “Wow. Okay, next question. Why do you lick my eyebrow?”

“Marking.”

“Excuse me?”

“I’m marking you as belonging to me. You are my person. I own you.”

“I see,” I said. “But it tickles.”

“Not my problem.”

“Okay, then, moving on. Why does it seem like a good time to, um, lick your private parts in front of a room full of people?”

“Is this a problem for you? From my point of view, your people are invading my kitty space. I live here. They don’t. Case closed.”

“Gotcha.”

“Next?”

“When you purr,” I said, “why do you sound like an outboard motor?”

“Ambience.”

I nodded. “Of course. Makes sense, I guess. Who doesn’t like ambience? And why does it seem as if you decide to jump on my lap at the exact moment I’m planning to get up?”

Maxwell stared at me. “Because you’re wearing a catnip sweater and I can’t get enough of you. I literally cannot pull myself away.”

“But I’m not wearing—”

“Oh, don’t be silly! I know you’re not actually covered in ‘nip’, but in my very fertile imagination. You’re reeking of it.”

“I had no idea.”

“Of course not. That’s the beauty of the way I stare at you. You’re never really sure what I’m thinking.”

I shivered. “But I’m always frightened.”

“As well you should be. Anything else? I’m kind of down to the wire for my toe thing.”

“Oh, sorry. Just one more.”

Maxwell sighed. “Make it snappy.”

“Sometimes when I rub your back, you flip your tail up and down. Is that a good thing or bad?”

“Gas.”

My mouth fell open. “What?”

“Gas. Flatulence. The aroma that keeps on giving.”

“I see.”

“Now,” he said, “if there’s nothing else, I feel an eighteen-hour nap coming on.”

“Oh, yeah, about that….”

The glare he gave me needed no explanation.

Who Knew Dentists Were Such Good Kissers?

Trixie here, hope all my readers are doing okay! When you read "Pillow Talk", you'll see what I mean about dentists and kissing. Dr. Graham Keebler is...amazing, stupendous, perfect. And I'm really not exaggerating. Really! I've never been in love before, and people always say you'll just know. They were right. When you know, you know. There's no doubt Graham's the one for me. Now just to figure out how all the tooth fairy stuff fits in. I know, I said it would never work, and I still don't see how it will. But, it's Mr. Amazing we're talking about here. It has to work. It just has to!!! If any of you have any ideas for me, leave a comment and Ruth will get them to me.

Thanks!

Trixie

Look Out Miss Snarky Pants!

This is Trixie Trident again, and I need your help. Ruth J. Hartman, the author of the book I'm in, "Pillow Talk", suggested I get your input.

I have a problem. Well actually, more than one, but right now I need to tell you about Korkie. That's Graham's dental assistant. Korkie, what a dumb name, right? And to think she had the nerve to make fun of my name. But that's not all she did. It seems like every chance she gets, she tries to make me look like a fool. Not that I always need help with that. I seem to do that all on my own. So why is she trying to sabotage me? It's almost as if...no, it couldn't be, could it? Could Korkie actually want Graham for herself? It makes sense, I guess. The name-calling, the haughty attitude towards me and trying to make me sound like an imbecile in front of Graham. Could all of that be because she's trying to get rid of me? Well if that's the case, she's got another thing coming. Now that I've met Graham, I know how special he is and I'm in this fight to win. Miss Snarky Pants better watch her back, because this tooth fairy bites!!
